The Temple Basin Carpark is located beside State Highway 73, 4 kms west of Arthur's Pass Village. The road is sealed and well maintained so chains are rarely needed. The free goods lift which carries all gear and supplies up the mountain, is also located beside State Highway 73 but 800m further west from the carpark. The access walking track starts from the west end of the carpark.

Temple Basin is opening late, on the 17th of September
The storm cycle is not over, just fashionably late.
Forecasts leading into today indicated significant snowfall occurring overnight Wednesday and through Thursday morning.
At 5:30 am, the big dump hasn't arrived just yet, but the elements are there.
Snowfall is forecast to build through the morning, with heavier snow from late morning through the afternoon. The current freezing level at 800 m is forecast to rise to aprox 1200 m later in the morning. This is still comfortably below the mountain, so conditions should turn favourable for consistent snowfall. Consistent light SE winds are expected through the day, encouraging good accumulation to build across the mountain. Conditions should stay wintry into the afternoon before the system eases.
So while the mountain is sitting pretty quiet right now, there's potential still to come. We'll be watching and provide an update at 10am.
