This week in the Snow - August 6 2020
Image: Ohau - Flying High (Aug 4)

Well, another week of “winter” done and dusted, and you’d be excused for thinking this is spring! Crazy weather, with rain and warm temps across many southern ski areas.  But let’s move on, there’s “better” weather ahead, for winter lovers!  But before we go there, the week that wasn’t …

So then, the week that wasn’t ...

Fair to say, that the last week has been dominated by a couple of highs that brought us some pretty mild weather. It closed Treble Cone for much of the week (they reopened today) due to warmth and a rain soaked snowpack, Cardrona survived. But Canterbury areas were also hit, with Cheeseman posting a photo of them driving up to Tower 5 of their T-bar, mid-winter. Just crazy. So let’s just say, not a stellar week in terms of snow.

Opening soon …

Hard to believe that we’re into August and still saying “opening soon”.  Basically in Canterbury it’s the Mt Hutt/Porters show, with all club fields now needing more snow. Manganui in the North the same. Finger crossed!

The Week ahead?

The weather models have been crazy and changing day by day! If you’ve been watching closely this Thursday/Friday was initially forecast for BIG snow. Our model had been suggesting 80+cms for TC, didn’t happen.

Anyway, here’s our best guess!

Ruapehu. Northerlies Friday with snow, potentially up to 18cm, turning Southerly Saturday, potentially strong, then easing Sunday from the West or nor-west. The rest of the week looks a bit untidy but better than the weekend). Best weekend day, Sunday. Best midweek day, umm, Wednesday, at a guess!

Canterbury. Northerlies with snow showers in the morning, turning softly with snow showers in the morning Saturday, up to 10 – 20cm of accumulation.  Best weekend day, Sunday. Best midweek day, Monday or Tuesday.

The Mackenzie. Same deal, Northerlies Friday changing to Southerly Friday. Sadly, not much accumulation forecast a few cm’s at best. Best weekend day, Sunday. Best midweek day, Monday or Tuesday.

Wanaka and Queenstown. Sadly, pretty stable weather! A few snow showers possible Friday afternoon and Sat Morning, but clearing. Then moderate Westerlies for the week. Best weekend day, Saturday. Best midweek day, Tuesday or Wednesday.

Events this week?

The Annual Roundhill 80’s Day, Saturday 8th August 2020. Be retro or … And on Sunday at Cardrona, Mountain Bikes on Snow. Always fun!
